Background of the Study
Historical migration has played a transformative role in shaping language evolution, particularly among Yoruba communities in Ibadan. As people migrate, they bring linguistic influences from diverse regions, resulting in the incorporation of new vocabulary, syntactic structures, and cultural expressions into the traditional Yoruba language (Oladele, 2023). In Ibadan, a major urban center, these influences are pronounced due to extensive migration flows driven by economic, political, and social factors. Over time, the Yoruba language has evolved to reflect a blend of indigenous elements and external linguistic inputs. This dynamic process impacts language usage, identity, and cultural continuity, creating hybrid forms that serve as markers of historical interaction. Understanding how migration influences language evolution provides insights into the adaptive nature of language and informs efforts to preserve linguistic heritage while embracing innovation (Adebayo, 2024; Chukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite clear evidence of language evolution driven by migration, the specific impacts on the Yoruba language in Ibadan remain underexplored. Migration has introduced changes that challenge traditional linguistic norms, potentially leading to the dilution of cultural heritage (Oladele, 2023). Educators and cultural custodians are concerned that rapid language evolution may hinder effective intergenerational transmission. The lack of systematic research on these changes complicates the development of strategies for language preservation and balanced innovation. This study aims to address these gaps by examining how historical migration has shaped the Yoruba language, identifying both positive adaptations and areas of potential loss (Adebayo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To analyze the effects of historical migration on Yoruba linguistic features.

  • To assess changes in language usage and cultural identity.

  • To propose strategies for preserving traditional linguistic elements.

Research Questions:

  • How has migration influenced Yoruba language evolution in Ibadan?

  • What specific linguistic changes have emerged?

  • How can cultural preservation be balanced with language innovation?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of historical migration on language evolution among Yoruba communities. The findings will inform cultural preservation strategies and provide insights into the adaptive processes of language in dynamic urban environments (Oladele, 2023; Chukwu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to Yoruba communities in Ibadan and focuses solely on historical migration effects, excluding other language change factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Historical Migration: The movement of populations that influences language contact over time.

  • Language Evolution: The process of change in linguistic structures.

  • Yoruba Communities: Groups primarily speaking Yoruba in Ibadan.
